FOOD AND CAFES
Whanganui has all you need (and then some) for an enjoyable study-away-from-home experience.
Whether you are fueling up for a late night study session or socialising with friends, Whanganui caters to your food requirements.
We have an excellent selection of cafes, restaurants and take-away outlets in the centre of town, as well as in some cool spots around the suburbs. If you are feeling like a cultural dining experience you can take your pick of Chinese, Japanase, Thai, Indian, Mexican and more… or if you are after something more “kiwi” (New Zealand) then many of our café and restaurants serve up delicious plates of european-infusion food.
A number of cafes reflect Whanganui’s vibrant arts scene with live music playing and local artists’ work displayed. It’s not uncommon in Whanganui, for the cafés to switch from serving great coffee and breakfast into an afternoon or evening music venue where beats and bands play for enthusistic event goers.
The River Traders Market that takes place on Saturday mornings along the banks of the Whanganui River has many food stalls with loads of tasty treats such as woodfired pizza, crepes, burgers and much more. Here you can also sample some traditional kai (food) such as hangi (traditional Maori cooking of meat and vegetables in ovens in a pit under the ground) and seasonal whitebait fritters.
